Green juice is one of the most talked-about wellness trends of the decade and when you learn of the powerful health benefits – including its all-important immune-boosting powers – you’ll know why.

The beverage has got everyone from A-listers to food bloggers talking, and while there is no official recipe for the colourful blend, more and more people are adding it to their daily regime.

So what is green juice and how can you make it work for you?

What is green juice?

Green juice is exactly what it says it is. It’s juices extracted from green vegetables. Foods such as spinach, kale, celery, cucumber, and wheatgrass are firm favourites for green juice, but people also add the likes of mint and parsley too.

It can have a bitter taste but made the right way it can also be delicious and so incredibly good for you.

Should I add fruit to my green juice?

It can be tempting to throw in a whole lot of fruit into your green juice to sweeten it up, but be wary of overloading it. The bulk of your juice should be from the green vegetables not from sugary fruit.

If you want to boost the flavour add some not-too-sweet green apple and lemon which is low in sugar and high in flavour.

What are the health benefits of green juice?

Along with all the vegetables in a green juice comes amazing antioxidants which slow or prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals.

Green juice is high in chlorophyll too which, in people, aids digestion and helps to detox the liver.

On top of that green juice contains a powerhouse of nutrients and vitamins which help promote a stronger immune system. Something which has never been so vital.

Consuming all this goodness in juice form is also potentially easier for your body to digest.

How much green juice should I be drinking?

You can get too much of a good thing so when it comes to how often you have green juice it’s best to limit your healthy beverage to one-a-day unless you’re doing a juice fast in which case it would be three to four times a day.

Green juice recipe

While there are plenty of variations of the green juice blend a homemade version beats store-bought nearly every time.

The ingredients listed on a green juice from a store often has added sugar or fruit concentrate on it. It’s far easier to control the amount of sugar if you make it yourself.

A perfectly balanced green juice recipe would be the following ingredients blitzed together:

 – 2 cups spinach

 – 1/2 English cucumber

 – 1/2 apple

 – 1/2 lemon

 – 1/4 cup of water

Enjoy!
